West Angelas West (Primary Crusher Substation Expansion)
Rio Tinto Iron Ore
SCOPE / SERVICES PROVIDED
SIGMA was engaged by Rio Tinto Iron Ore to support the West Angelas West Primary Crusher Substation Expansion project. The scope of services included:
- Expansion and commissioning of a new switchboard.
- Integration of the newly installed switchboard with the existing infrastructure.
PROJECT EXECUTION
To execute the project, SIGMA commissioned a new switchboard for the Primary Crusher Substation and seamlessly integrated it with the existing system. Ensuring system integrity and continuity was critical, as no downtime was permissible during the integration process. A detailed pre-commissioning assessment was conducted to develop a precise integration plan, and advanced tools and procedures were utilised to maintain safety and operational reliability.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
The project presented several challenges, including:
- Modifying the existing switchboard to accommodate the new installation.
- Safely adding and commissioning the new switchboard while the old switchboard remained partially live.
- Executing the integration with zero permissible downtime.
SIGMA overcame these challenges by deploying an experienced team and leveraging advanced tools and methodologies. A detailed integration plan ensured safe operations on the live system, while modifications and commissioning were executed with minimal disruption.
OUTCOMES
The successful expansion and commissioning of the Primary Crusher Substation highlighted SIGMA’s expertise in managing complex system integrations in live environments. The project was delivered within the stipulated timeframe, minimising potential disruptions and ensuring system stability. This achievement further reinforced SIGMA’s reputation as a trusted partner for critical substation expansion projects.
